Empowering Humanities Communicators: Introducing the CHC’s Talking Points Toolbox Proposal

—

—

Imagine a platform where you could find all the necessary, relevant, and relatable information about the humanities, ready for you to use and apply to your own communication goals. This is exactly what the Center for Humanities Communication (CHC) aims to provide with its innovative advocacy Talking Points Toolbox. Currently in draft form, the CHC hopes to begin building this Toolbox within the next year, and we welcome suggestions, partners, researchers, and CHC Associates interested in participating in this project.

What is Talking Points Toolbox?

Center for Humanities Communication proposal for a "Talking Points Toolbox" (partial view of draft document).

Talking Points is an advocacy toolbox that will be designed to offer multimodal and vibrant communication materials that are free, easy, and simple to use and adapt. The Toolbox will work with research assistants and partner associations and organizations to amplify and consolidate the advocacy tools already in use, and it will also actively seek and create new material. These resources will be meticulously organized by audience, discipline, and other relevant tags, making it easy to find exactly what you need. (Go to draft proposal for Talking Points Toolbox)

What’s the Purpose of the Toolbox?

The purpose of the Talking Points Toolbox is to make publicly available an organized archive of superior content that is particularly relevant and relatable. This content is crafted to communicate the humanities with clarity, joy, vibrancy, and awe. This Toolbox values quality over quantity, and our goal is to refresh communication about the humanities through the RITE content:

What Will the Toolbox Include?

Currently we envision the Talking Points Toolbox to include five distinct sections that will be populated with high quality materials and reference to materials like podcasts, short videos, blogs, TED talks, Infographics, video games, board games, apps, images, Memes, social media posts, interviews, fact sheets, and more. The five sections are:

  1. Definitions: Official and Unofficial Definitions and Descriptions
  2. Disciplines: A closer look at specific Majors.
  3. HumPop: Awe-inspiring examples of humanities in popular culture
  4. Myths: Debunking Persistent Stigmas
  5. Tips & Resources: How to Re-Frame Your Messaging
